Did you know that 1 in 4 Americans aged 65+ falls every year? Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older Americans. Falls can take a serious toll on the quality of life and independence, however, falling is not an inevitable part of aging. Through practical lifestyle adjustments and evidence-based programs, the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced.
To build awareness and help prevent falls, we are sharing the following information from LA Falls Prevention, a California coalition that focuses on fall risk and prevention for older adults.
Older adults may exhibit one or more fall risk factors including vision loss, physical inactivity, home safety concerns or medication information. Take the following assessment to determine if you are at risk of falling: http://lafallsprevention.org/fall-risk-assessment/.
LA Falls Prevention recently launched the LAF Library, an online video library, to help seniors get and stay active during the COVID-19 pandemic. All of the videos are instructed by fall specialists, are short in length, and are geared towards improving mobility and participation while reducing fall risk. We encourage you to check out the videos and get active!
