CSR: CalPERS erred in calculating employer contribution amount

Sacramento, Calif. – California State Retirees (CSR) believes CalPERS erred in calculating the 2017 100/90 State Annuitant employer contribution amount.

Government Code section 22871 requires using the current year's top four health care plans to establish the next year's state contribution amount.

Instead of using the top four plans, CalPERS replaced the fourth largest plan with the fifth largest plan. This calculation passes nearly the entire increase in 2017 health plan premiums onto state retirees. CalPERS proposes to increase reimbursement to single enrollee retirees by a mere $2, with no reimbursement increase for family plans.

In a letter sent August 3rd by CSR President Tim Behrens to CalPERS Deputy Executive Officer Doug McKeever, Behrens requests that CalPERS recalculate the contribution amount consistent with Goverment Code.
